Art Nouveau, Métamorphoses du bijou. - Froissart Rossella

Dès la fin du xixe, la joaillerie devient un vecteur important de l'expérimentation formelle et de l'innovation plastique de son époque, grâce au développement des connaissances en matière de pierre, des techniques de taille et de sertissage. Livres et expositions permettent de mettre en valeur cet art décoratif de premier plan qui accompagne le romantisme dans ses derniers feux avant d'adopter le répertoire Art nouveau naissant. Les paysages de l'âme, les songes et cauchemars du symbolisme imaginés par Lalique, Fouquet ou Carabin, de même que les formes et motifs empruntés à la Renaissance d'Eugène Grasset ou Lucien Gaillard cèdent la place à une faune et une flore issues d'un nouvel imaginaire biologique, aquatique et sous-marin, nourries par la vulgarisation des grandes découvertes scientifiques et de la pensée évolutionniste. Pour mieux représenter la nature, Vever, Lalique, Boucheron, Fouquet ou Nocq introduisent des matériaux nouveaux : corne, plume, éventail plus diversifié de pierres semi-précieuses. L'étude des plantes comme des minéraux et cristaux, notamment grâce aux magnifiques planches élaborées par le biologiste Ernst Haeckel, ouvre également la voie, dès les années 1900, à un nouvel ordre décoratif révélant la structure cristalline des micro-organismes. Cette géométrisation tout en retenue ouvre le champ de l'abstraction et du mouvement Art déco qui s'affirmera dès les années 1910 avant de triompher dans les années 1920. Accompagné d'un glossaire des matériaux et techniques et de notices biographiques des principaux acteurs de l'époque, cet ouvrage permet de comprendre la richesse et l'évolution stylistique du bijou et de le replacer dans l'art de son temps.

From the end of the 19th century, jewelry became an important vector of formal experimentation and plastic innovation of its time, thanks to the development of knowledge of stone, cutting and setting techniques. Books and exhibitions allow us to highlight this leading decorative art which accompanies Romanticism in its final stages before adopting the emerging Art Nouveau repertoire. The landscapes of the soul, the dreams and nightmares of symbolism imagined by Lalique, Fouquet or Carabin, as well as the forms and motifs borrowed from the Renaissance of Eugène Grasset or Lucien Gaillard give way to a fauna and flora from a new biological, aquatic and underwater imagination, nourished by the popularization of great scientific discoveries and evolutionary thought. To better represent nature, Vever, Lalique, Boucheron, Fouquet and Nocq introduced new materials: horn, feather, a more diverse range of semi-precious stones. The study of plants as well as minerals and crystals, notably thanks to the magnificent plates created by the biologist Ernst Haeckel, also opened the way, from the 1900s, to a new decorative order revealing the crystalline structure of microorganisms. This restrained geometrization opens the field of abstraction and the Art Deco movement which will assert itself from the 1910s before triumphing in the 1920s. Accompanied by a glossary of materials and techniques and biographical notes of the main actors of period, this work allows us to understand the richness and stylistic evolution of jewelry and to place it in the art of its time.
