Achille Lauro was originally the liner Willem Ruys when sold to the Italian Lauro Organization in 1966. Achille Lauro left the Riuniti yards as a newborn star. After being hijacked by Palestinian warriors (PLO), in October 1985, the blue liner and cruiser made international headlines. Swept by a catastrophic fire Achille Lauro sank 2 December 1994 off the Somalian coast.

In 1965, she was sold to the Flotta Lauro Line, or Star Lauro, (now MSC Cruises) and renamed the Achille Lauro (after the company owner). The ship became world news when it was hijacked by members of the Palestine Liberation Front in 1985. In 1994, the ship caught fire and sank in the Indian Ocean off Somalia. ISBN 9789...
