In May 1920, the German ex-emperor Wilhelm II occupied the Huis Doorn purchased by him to spend his remaining life there, until 1941, in exile. He took 64 train carriages with him. Among this estate were thousands of photographs taken in the period between 1845 and 1919. In Doorn, his collection was supplemented with photographs taken in his exile and photographs sent to him as gifts. After the emperor's death, most of these photographs remained, in accordance with a provision in his will, in Huis Doorn, which was not opened much later as a museum. For a long time, the photographs led to a dormant existence in boxes and albums, not known to the public and for the most part not even to the museum staff. Only when inventory was started in the late nineties did it become clear that this was a very unique collection, consisting of more than 13,000 photographs. Gathered royally.
