When I began work on this Volume, I faced the overwhelming challenge of assembling the greatest photographs of the most significant event of our time. After poring over thousands of images taken by photographers from both sides of the conflict, I realized that they told an amazing story in black and white, the story of my parents ' generation and the epic conflict they endured, a war of stark moral contrasts between the urge to dominate and destroy and the will to survive and be free.

What constitutes a great photograph? Action alone does not make a photograph great. To be great, a photograph must capture a critical moment - the faces of young men going into battle for the first time, the silent cry of an abandoned baby in a bombed-out railway station, a lone French resistance fighter facing death before a Nazi firing squad. Such photographs capture the emotional essence of a fateful moment and leave an indelible impression on the viewer.
