The Gathering - Anne Enright

KORTE INHOUD

In her novel The Gathering (2007), Irish author Anne Enright tells the story of Veronica Hegarty who gathers with her mother and siblings in Dublin for the wake of her brother, Liam. Enright received England's prestigious Booker Prize for The Gathering, though not without controversy. According to reports, the voting committee was torn over whether Ian McEwan's On Chesil Beach qualified as a novel or novella, resulting in a compromise naming Enright the winner.

Thirty-nine-year-old Veronica Hegarty is one of twelve children belonging to "Mammy" Hegarty, who suffers from dementia. Veronica's favorite sibling is Liam, an alcoholic whose body is found on the shores of Brighton, England. While Veronica's sister Bea cares for Mammy, Veronica travels from Dublin to Brighton to retrieve Liam's body.

The narrative is interspersed with flashbacks from Veronica's life and that of Veronica's grandmother, Ada Merriman. At the age of 19, Ada falls in love with Lambert Nugent but marries his friend Charles Spillane instead. ...
