Tacitus und Ausklang. - BÜCHNER, K.,

KORTE INHOUD

?Büchner?s aim is to grapple with difficult passages or chapters, to study their text, context and thought, and to draw conclusions of wide and general interest. (?) Büchner?s guiding principle - that generalisation must proceed from the careful analysis of particulars - is admirable. Three dangers lurk, not always or often avoided: a cavalier treatment of the evidence, a tendency to read too much into it, and circular argument. As a stimulus to the knowledgeable, the book is excellent; as a guide to the innocent, dangerous.? (KENNETH WELLESLEY in Gnomon, 1965, p.702).
