?This collection of essays honours one of Europe?s most distinguished scholars in the field of ancient thought and its influence, from Plato to the Middle Ages. The contributors are an international galaxy of appropriate distinction, and their offerings match in variety the astonishing range of Pépin?s intellectual interests. (?) Most of the contents are in French, with some articles in English, German, and Italian. (?) This book is a flourishing silva of ideas and arguments in which most scholars, whether of late or classical antiqiuity, will find matter to interest them. Over the past few decades interest in middle and neoplatonism has grown vigorously in the English-speaking domain. The intrinsic power and worth of the material is increasingly appreciated and restrictive epochal prejudices have substantially dissolved.
