Proceedings of a 2010 conference held at the University of Ghent during which scholars presented their recent research on the composition, competencies, and functioning of the intermediate institutions in the County of Flanders, ranging from local (city or lordship) to supra-regional or central level of the Burgundian-Habsburg state. From the fifteenth to the eighteenth century, these institutions have experienced a remarkable evolution in terms of centralization, professionalization and bureaucratization.
