Looking back on the past century, the division of Germany and Europe - with the Wall as its most prominent symbol - has now been relegated to the past, it is history. On August 13, 1961 the former leaders of the GDR closed the borders to the West and thereby put an end to all hopes for a quick end to the division of Germany.
