'The discussion is concentrated not on theory itself, but on the three famous works, 'Poetics', 'Ars Poetica', and (not withstanding its rhetorical provenance) 'On the Sublime': the 'ancient' part of the book is organized as a series of chapters on these texts followed in each case by chapters on their intellectual-historical context. The result is that such important topics as the pre-sophistic prehistory of poetics, the activities of the grammarians, the insights of Philodemus, get very short shrift indeed. (...) The discussion of the material that Fuhrmann does deal with is generally coherent, vigorous, and lucid. His method, however, involves two further omissions (...)
