'Rinuccio da Castiglione's 'Fabula Penia' appeared about 1415, some twenty years before Bruni's part-translation of Aristophanes' 'Plutus' claimed to be introducing Greek comedy to the Italian reader. The auhor learned his Greek in Crete, where the story is set. Ludwig usefully demonstrates how motives and scenes from 'Plutus' are set within the structural frame of Theocritus VII; he also lists the numerous other Classical borrowings which help to mould the texture of this prose-drama. The text without translation is preceded by an informative Introduction, in which the interesting history of the sole manuscript, deposited by William Gray, Bisshop of Ely, at Balliol about 1450, is described.'
