The rise of photography around the middle of the 19th century coincided with the period in which after years of indifference and even contempt (see anticlerical aspect of the French Revolution and liberal governments afterwards), renewed interest in Gothic art and architecture had reached its peak. With a very rare photo (albumine, 1868) of the Cologne Cathedral with the old crane (mid 15th century) on the unfinished south tower, shortly before demolition (p. 145).
