Centuries ago, the Maya developed a unique and magnificent culture. Their architecture, astronomy, complex writing and calendrical systems and their brilliant art forms still evoke a powerful response in our imaginations today. And yet, in the tenth century, in a way that has not yet been fully explained, the classic Maya civilization came to a sudden end.nnThe Maya themselves did not disappear, however. Despite the catastrophic upheavals of Spanish colonization and other "foreign" influences, they still maintain their languages, religious traditions and in particular their traditional woven clothing. Maya textiles speak silently but with expressive power, transmitting layered meanings. Using age-old techniques and the traditional back-strap loom, the Maya woman weaves her personal history and her perception of what it is to be Maya into her creations.
