Jean-François Lyotard (1924-1998) behoorde tot de bekendste vertegenwoordigers van het differentiedenken in de Franse filosofie en was hoogleraar aan de universiteit van Parijs-VIII. Voor het grote publiek is zijn naam vooral verbonden met zijn boek La condition postmoderne (1979).
Many definitions of postmodernism focus on its nature as the aftermath of the modern industrial age when technology developed dynamically.
