This work was exhibited as a two-part installation, and now a permanent work, in the Voltaire Room of the Taylor Institution at Oxford University. Conceived for and exhibited at the Divinity School of the Bodleian Library, the texts used in the work play upon the relationship between the writings of Voltaire and John Locke, utilizing and recontextualizing material located in the respective libraries.
This book configures these works back to back. 'The (Ethical) Space of Cabinets 7 & 8' is printed vertically while 'Say: I Do Not Know' is printed horizontally.

In 1969 installeerde Kosuth een Information Room met boeken die allemaal inhoudelijk met elkaar te maken hebben, aangevuld met kranten en tijdschriften. Daaruit volgden zijn Investigations, waarvoor hij gefotokopieerde bundels met teksten van linguïsten en filosofen ter beschikking stelde van het publiek. De tentoonstelling werd zo tot een ruimte van studie en contemplatie.
Two Oxford Reading Rooms bestaat eigenlijk uit twee kunstenaarsboeken The (Ethical) Space of Cabinets 7 & 8 en Say: I do notknow, waarvan het eerste verticaal, en het tweede horizontaal moet gelezen worden.
Het colofon geeft de volgende uitleg over de publicatie: The (Ethical) Space of Cabinets 7 & 8’ and ‘Say: I do not know’ are texts with originally formed part of two installations by Joseph Kosuth, commissioned by Book Works as part of ‘The Reading Room’ (1994). These texts play upon the relationship of Voltaire to the writing of John Locke, utilising and recontextualising material located in the respective libraries.
The Reading Room was een tijdelijk tentoonstellingsproject van de Londense uitgever Book Works waarbij Kosuth de beschikking kreeg over twee bibliotheekruimtes van de Oxford University: de Voltaire Room in de Taylor Institution en de Divinity School van de Bodleian Library. Kosuth integreerde zijn teksten in deze eerbiedwaardige humanistische sites. Vervolgens werden ze te boek gesteld, gecombineerd met beeldmateriaal van de Voltairebibliotheek, die als het ware plank per plank geïnventariseerd werd. In vergelijking met de droge, minimalistische kunstenaarsboeken van de conceptuelen uit de jaren ’70, oogt Two Oxford Reading Rooms gesofisticeerd en zelfs elegant. Het gebruik van foto’s van boekenplanken in combinatie met teksten op transparant kalkpapier, en van uitsnijdingen in de tekstpagina’s (waardoor bepaalde delen van de tekst gemaskeerd en pas na omdraaien van het blad zichtbaar worden), maakt het een complexe en gelaagde publicatie die zijn finesses pas na enige inspanning van de lezer prijsgeeft.
