'W.'s main aim is to offer a reconstruction of those poems ascribed to Orpheus in antiquity which describe the origins of the world and the gods. Nearly two hundred pages are devoted to this task. The rest is a frame, consisting of two opening chapters surveying the evidence for poetry in general attached to the names of Orpheus and other legendary poets, and an Index of Orphic fragments, with brief comments on possible provenance and dating. (...) As W. admits, much of the detail is very speculative. (...) One marvels at the audacity of the attempt, but it must be admitted that in the end many problems remain unsolved, some perhaps insoluble. (...) It would, however, be unfair to imply that objections such as these undermine the value of this book all together.
