Septem contra Thebas. Edited with Introduction and Commentary by G.O. Hutchinson. - Aeschylus

KORTE INHOUD

?This is a good and thoroughly reliable edition. In the first part of his Introduction, Hutchinson deals concisely with the tetralogy and the surviving fragments (?). In the second section he discusses the structure of Septem, with special emphasis on the discontinuity in atmosphere between the first and second parts of the play (?). The third section gives a useful account of the transmission of the text. (?). The Commentary is admirably concise. According to the Preface the first version was twice as long, and one sometimes wishes that he had been less ruthless in compressing it. (?) But it would be unfair to stress such omissions, when H. has in fact given us so much. The Commentary as a whole is marked by outstanding judgement and literary taste. ? (A.F.
