Religion and Politics in Aristophanes' 'Clouds'. - MARIANETTI, Marie C.,

KORTE INHOUD

'this book illustrates the difficulty of saying anything new and convincing about 'Clouds'. It justifies its claim (..) to analyze 'the way in which 'Clouds' reveals the evolution of traditional Athenian beliefs and practices' during a period of transition and 'examine the major factors which may have contributed to the abandonment of rooted religious customs by the Athenians'; but M. quotes massively from Guthrie, Burkert and the chapters by Gould and Muir in the Easterling-Muir 'Greek Religion and Society' (...). Her further argument, that Aristophanes, although writing in a comic vein, commented seriously on the viability of novel ideas...', is not convincingly sustained.' (NAN V. DUNBAR in The Classical Review (New Series), 1994, pp.266-267).
