?The present volume (?) traces the history of ?odium regni? from the start of the republic to the empire, and presents us with a survey of Roman history seen from the viewpoint of this central concept. M. goes on to chart the growth in favourable depictions of kings, and the transformations in ideology which made empire seem acceptable. Along the way there are discussions of ideological terminology, detailed historical sketches of rome?s encounters with kings, real foreign ones and aspiring Roman ones, and elegant surveys of the mythological and theological traditions which ultimately nurtured the principate. There is clearly much to be gained by heightening awareness of the potency which accrued to the idea of ?rex? at many points in rome?s past, and with a broad sense of pertinent topics, the volume brings together many disparate pieces of information, and could prove a rich resource for those needing convincing of the centrality of monarchic ideology in Roman thought.?
