'In this monograph G. Daverio Rocchi collects and analyses evidence from classical and Hellenistic Greek texts relating to mainland Greece and the Greek coast of Asia Minor which concerns borders and frontier areas. The introduction sets out the difference between a border and a frontier zone and there follow three general chapters which cover the importance of boundaries (...). Two chapters then gather and reproduce texts relevant to linear boundaries and to frontier zones respectively with commentary on the individual items. Two furhehr chapters deal with the particular border and boundary problems of Athens and Lakonia. A final chapter on the function and effects of the frontier concludes the discursive part of the work which is then scrupulously indexed (indices of names, sources and a general index). The topic is an important one, and the collection of evidence is certainly useful, but the monograph as a whole is disappointing.
