His book is more than an expensive and extensive re-examination of a minor curiosity from the tangle of pseudo-Vergiliana, and more than the 'useful work of reference for anyone seriously interested in Latin language and literature' promised by the blurb (...). The opening salvo correctly suggests that 'Ciris' is to be read as a demonstration of philological methodology and modern analytic technique, with the emphasis on rigour and precision (...). In the detailed Introduction (pp.3-66) and scattered among the line notes are included many generous reflective and self-reflective discussions of L.'s procedure, his hesitations, sceptical doubts, and evaluative principles from which we will all learn a great deal.
